Collaboration with Finnish companies on brand for adidas

The Moomin-themed collection is one of many collaborations between adidas and Finnish companies in recent years.

Moomin Characters

German sporting goods giant adidas continues to strengthen its ties with Finnish brands and launches a new Moomin-themed collection.

The adidas Originals x Moomin collection pays tribute to the adventurous spirit of the beloved Finnish characters. Designed for autumn and winter, it comprises a T-shirt, a fleece vest, a fluffy waist bag, socks, a sweatshirt and pants. Each piece features an illustration of a wintry Moomintroll from Tove Jansson’s comic Moomin’s Winter Follies, first published in 1955.

The collection marks the second collaboration by this partnership, following a summer collection released in March 2023. It included apparel, trainers and accessories, which all adorned an illustration or a subtle reference to Moomins and their love of nature.

“We were creating a collection that focused on themes of adventure, nature, and fun – there was no better fit than the Moomins! They embody these themes perfectly,” said Francesca Stevenson, product manager at adidas. “We wanted to create a collection that celebrated the playful and adventurous nature of the Moomins and bring this to life by using the beautiful and iconic artworks across our range.”

The partnership between adidas and Marimekko commenced in 2021.

Marimekko

The German company also has a thriving partnership with Finnish fashion house Marimekko. In early 2023, the duo announced their fifth joint sportswear collection. It incorporated two iconic Marimekko prints from the 1960s, Linssi and Lokki, in a range of adidas’ clothes and accessories. Key pieces in the collection were partly made from recycled materials.

“To see our patterns come alive through movement, and supported by adidas’s world class performance technology, is incredible,” commented Rebekka Bay, Marimekko’s creative director. “This collection is a modern expression of print and a wonderful legacy for the next generation to enjoy.”

These creative collaborations continue a trend in recent years where the German sportswear giant has partnered with Finnish brands, including sustainable textile material companies Spinnova and Infinited Fiber. The latter’s post-consumer textile waste-based fibre, Infinna, was last year used to produce a tracksuit designed by Stella McCartney that sought to highlight the possibilities of circular economy in the fashion industry.
