Finnish packaging solutions have been named as some of the best in the Nordics at ScanStar, a packaging competition organised annually since 1969 by the Scandinavian Packaging Association (SPA).
The jury of the traditional competition evaluated almost 30 packaging solutions from a number of domains of the packaging industry, from logistics solutions and food packaging to gift packaging and display cases.
The Finnish solutions that reaped praise from the jury were a user-friendly seasoning packaging by Atria, a stylish hologram-printed gin box by Metsä Board, a fibre-based e-commerce packaging by Paptic, a consumer-engaging biscuit box by Pyroll and PackageMedia, and three functional cardboard packagings by Stora Enso.
“This is a completely new kind of packaging innovation, where usability and convenience have been maximised and the amount of plastic has been reduced,” a press release described the packaging by Atria. “The quality of the meat is visible in the package because it is not covered with the seasoning sauce.”
Paptic impressed the jury with its durable and moisture-resistant packaging that is pleasant to touch and almost noiseless to handle. It also takes up less space and is easier to fill than packages made from corrugated cardboard.
Pyroll and Package Media were congratulated for engaging consumers in the process of redesigning the packaging of Domino biscuits by asking them to submit images of their favourite places in Finland.
“The jury predicts the package will also have collectible value,” it said about the series of boxes decorated with 1 200 consumer-contributed images.
A busy year
Many of the Finnish award-winners have made headlines in recent times.
Stora Enso recently said it has launched an international competition for renewable packaging solutions and will build a pilot production facility for Cellufoam, its proprietary fibre-based foam for cushioning and protecting packaging.
