All the daily Finnish business news that works: Solar Foods and Finnish booze make headlines.
Solar Foods has won high recognition for its revolutionary protein, Altia has teamed up with the Von Elk Company for sparkling mulled wine, and Finnish microbreweries Pyynikin, Maku and Lumi are shipping their craft beers to the UK.
Finnish food-tech startup Solar Foods has received an Index Award for a new type of protein it has developed mainly from air and electricity. The sustainable protein is now being tested for different diets and food products and can in the future be grown and harvested anywhere, including the desert and even space. The Index Award, also know as the Nobel Prize for Design, is supported by the state of Denmark and handed out every two years to solutions in five categories with the biggest impact on the environment and people’s lives. Each winner is also granted 100 000 euros in prize money, making it the most substantial monetary award in design.
Tampere-based Pyynikin Brewing Company has sealed a considerable export agreement with the Beer52 online shop in the UK. The first order is for 160 000 cans of craft beer, which alone exceeds the total of 3 500 litres exported last year from Finland to the UK. In addition, beer from Finnish microbreweries Maku Brewing and Lumi Brewing will be sold by Beer52.
Pyynikin Brewing Company
Finnish state-owned alcoholic beverage company Altia has partnered with family-owned Von Elk Company, which is known for Glöet, the most popular sparkling glögg in the Nordics. As of 1 October, Altia will become the exclusive representative of Von Elk’s products in the Nordic and Baltic countries. The deal also includes a minority investment by Altia in the Finnish family business. Von Elk introduced the award-winning sparkling glögg in time for the 2015 Christmas season, and, earlier this year, it also launched its Gozy sparkling rosé and white sangria drinks.
