American director Riley Stearns is at the helm of a new satirical sci-fi thriller, Dual, which is currently being filmed in Tampere.

The production has brought a high-profile cast to the Finnish city, with Karen Gillan (Dr WhoAvengers: Infinity War and Endgame) playing a woman who, after receiving a fatal diagnosis, chooses to have herself cloned.

A miraculous recovery puts her in mortal combat with her clone. Gillan is joined by Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad, Westworld) and Beulah Koale (Hawaii Five-O).

Since arriving over a month ago, I continue to find myself inspired by the city of Tampere,” said director Stearns. “It has informed the look and feel of Dual in ways I never could have imagined while writing the script. I’m excited for audiences to see the world we’re able to create thanks to filming here.

The production is the first Hollywood film to be shot entirely in Finland. Production company XYZ Films ended up in Tampere following a suggestion by its Helsinki-based investor IPR.VC, according to YLE. Other local backers include Film Tampere and Business Finland.

“We’re thrilled to be working with Riley and this great creative team,” said XYZ partner Aram Tertzakian. “XYZ is already deeply invested in Finland, so it’s truly an honour to bring a project with the pedigree of Dual as Finland’s first major Hollywood production.”

The production is set to take six weeks, while taking into account proper hygiene and safety protocols, and employ a total of 100 film industry professionals in Finland.
