Designers at Fiskars, a Finnish design heavyweight with roots dating back to the mid-1600s, have received one of the most prestigious honours in the global design industry, the Red Dot: Design Team of the Year title.

The title is bestowed on one design team a year in recognition of their consistency in the pursuit of innovative and sustainable design. The list of past winners includes the likes of Ferrari, Porsche and Lenovo.

“Our team is extremely proud to receive this award, which celebrates our tradition of nurturing good design,” saidPetteri Masalin, the creative design lead at Fiskars. “Ever since Fiskars was founded [in 1649], we have stayed true to our strong heritage and DNA while being bold and innovative.”

Fiskars was first recognised in the international design competition in 1990, reminded Peter Zec, the founder and chief executive of the Red Dot Award.

“Ever since, the company’s products have been winning over not just our jury but also myself. The design team’s creations are characterised by their ergonomic and user-friendly nature. The technological innovations and groundbreaking combinations of materials, together with the understated matter-of-factness, make these products really quite special,” he said.

This year, the company’s watering nozzles and wands earned it also the top award for ground-breaking design, Red Dot: Best of the Best.

Fiskars is best known for its instantly recognisable orange-handled scissors, which have sold more than a billion units since they revolutionised the way the world saw the simple household tool in 1967.
