Finnish company Spinnova has developed a sustainable fibre innovation that has been recognised with a World Changing Ideas Award by Fast Company.

Spinnova was selected as the winner in the Experimental (New!) category of the 2019 World Changing Ideas Awards, an event organised this year for the third time that highlights businesses, policies, projects and concepts that are addressing pressing issues facing humanity.

The awards are presented by American business magazine Fast Company. Altogether 17 winners, 200 finalists and 300 honourable mentions were selected from the 2 000 entries received this year.

“We’re thrilled to see Spinnova make this remarkable list of innovative solutions,” said Spinnova’s CEO, Janne Poranen. “It’s important in today’s world to give recognition to companies whose purpose and business are based on sustainability. We work hard to scale up an innovation that global, critical challenges like climate change desperately need.”

Spinnova’s sustainable innovation produces textile-ready fibre from cellulose without any harmful chemicals. The company has completed an industrial-scale pilot line in Finland and is now set for product development projects with brand partners.

The idea behind Spinnova was born at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. The company’s chief innovator and co-founder, Juha Salmela, was recently named European CTO of the Year.
