Finnish universities listed among world’s best
Eight Finnish universities have been listed among the top 1 000 higher education institutions in this year’s Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).
The Shanghai ranking has been published annually since 2003 by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University and is among the most esteemed university rankings. The study measures universities on six indicators that examine the quality of education and faculty, research output and per-capita performance.
Out of Finnish universities, the University of Helsinki dropped five spots to 63rd but retained its status as the highest-ranking Finnish university.
The University of Oulu, University of Tampere and the University of Jyväskylä improved their position on the ranking from last year, whereas Aalto University, the University of Turku and the University of Eastern Finland clung on to their spots.
It is estimated that there are 18 000 to 23 000 universities in the world. Making the Shanghai ranking therefore means that the institution is among the top five per cent globally.
In the ranking’s subject listing, the University of Helsinki and the University of Turku fared well in medical sciences, while the University of Jyväskylä ranked 39th in education.
