Finnish company Prometec Tools has received an order from Stockholm Exergi for an automated sampling robot and additional sampling equipment.

The equipment is for Stockholm Exergi’s Värtaverket, one of the world’s largest biomass-fuelled heat and power plants, located close to the Stockholm city centre.

“We decided to make a deal with Prometec because their solution best answered our strict sampling demands,” states project sponsor Martin Eriksson from Stockholm Exergi, in a release. “The Finnish robot will be installed to the Värtaverket site next year.”

Prometec’s automated sampling solution brings millions of euros in savings for biomass power plants. The sampling robot drills five-litre samples from randomly chosen places from each biomass load, as biomass is an extremely heterogeneous material in which the moisture within one load can vary considerably. This approach speeds up quality controlling and improves working safety.

The biofuel required by Stockholm Exergi is delivered by boat, train and truck loads. This is Prometec’s first robot order that concerns trains.

“Globally, enormous amounts of biomass are being moved by train,” says Prometec CEO Juha Huotari. “This opens a large growth potential for us.”
