Finnish university lands funding for EU project

The GLOMO research project focuses on international labour mobility to Europe and within the EU. The University of Vaasa is joined by an additional seven host organisations that are offering PhD positions to a total of 15 experts in the field.

The project has received almost four million euros in EU funding through the Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, of which the University of Vaasa’s share is around 500 000 euros.   

“There are also corporate partners involved in the GLOMO project, such as Wärtsilä in Finland, where the students will complete a four-month internship period relating to the field,” explains professor Vesa Suutari from the University of Vaasa. “In addition, the students will develop their international capabilities by working as visiting researchers at a partner university.”

Although migration of employees across the EU is increasing, it is still falling short of target levels. Expatriates face obstacles including lower employment prospects and employment not meeting their skill levels, despite a favourable legal framework.

A central objective of the Europe 2020 strategy is thus to promote labour mobility across the continent, and the GLOMO research project will provide key information and expertise regarding the global mobility phenomenon.
