Finnish engineering company Wärtsilä is to supply the exhaust gas cleaning systems for two bulk carrier ships being built for Tokyo-based NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers (NYK BP).

The two vessels are the first owned or chartered by the NYK Group – one of Japan’s largest shipping companies and owner of NYK BP – to have exhaust gas cleaning systems installed. It is also the first time Wärtsilä is supplying the technology in Japan.

After the Wärtsilä exhaust gas cleaning systems have been fitted into the ships, the vessels will be compliant with the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) SOx regulations, coming into force in 2020.

“We are pleased and proud to be the supplier of choice for these two new ships, especially as it gives us an inroad into the Japanese market for exhaust gas cleaning solutions,” says Sigurd Jenssen, director of Exhaust Gas Cleaning at Wärtsilä Marine Solutions.

Wärtsilä is scheduled to deliver the equipment to the shipyard in July 2018. The ships will be ready and delivered in late 2018 and early 2019 respectively.
