Valio develops groundbreaking milk salt
Finnish dairy product manufacturer Valio has created a milk salt innovation that significantly reduces the salt content of foods without compromising on taste.
The result of nearly 10 years of development, Valio Valsa milk salt is made from the natural minerals in milk whey.
Containing 80 per cent less sodium than regular table salt, the innovation is being used in the production of some notable products. In May, Valio is introducing its reduced salt Polar 15 cheese and Oivariini spread, containing 50 per cent less salt than ordinary margarine spreads and cheeses. Meanwhile, Finnish company Fazer is also set to introduce Oululainen Reilu futissämpylä breads, made using Valio Valsa.
Valio’s overall goal is to reduce 60 000 kilograms of salt from the Finnish diet over the next three years.
“Salt is a global challenge,” observes Valio’s category manager Teea Björklund. “Some EU countries, in addition to Finland, have started to make efforts to reduce salt through national programmes.”
Aside from Great Britain, Björklund also points to the United States as a potential export market around the world for the Valio Valsa milk salt innovation.
