Helsinki places third in the 2016 ranking of the best cities to live in by US Metropolis magazine.

Architecture and design magazine Metropolis praises Helsinki for design and liveability, positioning the Finnish capital just behind its European counterparts Copenhagen and Berlin.

“Given the presence of Arabia, Artek and Iittala products in nearly every Finnish home, it isn’t surprising that design has been embraced at the city scale to improve Helsinki,” the magazine writes. “Although relatively small for a capital, Helsinki has long ranked highly for liveability thanks to its top-tier education, public transportation, safety and proximity to nature.”

According to the magazine, the likes of the metro extension and the new city library embody the ambitiousness of Helsinki. The same aspiring attitude is illustrated well in residential housing.

“While other capitals struggle with rising housing costs, Helsinki is undertaking large-scale building to contain upward price trends for current and future residents,” Metropolis underlines. “The city’s stated ambition is to provide a minimum of 6 000 new residential units per year.”
