Wärtsilä wins an LNG assignment in the UNESCO-protected Wadden Sea, Wello finds a partner for its wave energy technology, and Kemira ramps up its water treatment chemicals production in the UK.

Wärtsilä turns ferry eco-friendlier in sensitive waters

Finnish technology group Wärtsilä has been assigned to convert Münsterland into an LNG vessel, which will completely eliminate the ferry’s sulphur oxides (SOx) emissions and significantly reduce its nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. The ferry operates in the shallow waters of the Wadden Sea, in the southeastern end of the North Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed area that features high biodiversity and is important for breeding and migrating birds. This is the third such project Wärtsilä will carry out for the German ferry owner Aktien-Gesellschaft EMS (AG EMS) or one of its subsidiaries.

Kemira invests heavily in UK operation

Finnish chemicals company Kemira has announced a multi-million-euro investment in its water treatment chemicals production line in Goole, the UK. The investment will almost double production capacity at the site, as Kemira anticipates a surge in demand due to the adoption of stricter regulations on, for example, phosphorus removal from wastewater.


Wello finds new wave energy technology partner

Finnish wave energy innovator Wello has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with energy industry contractor Saipem to optimise its WEC Penguin technology, one of the most promising technologies for producing energy from waves. Saipem will bring to the table its naval engineering expertise and long experience in executing offshore projects in harsh environments. Saipem also wants to investigate further applications of the technology for oil and gas recovery infrastructures, such as improving the energy efficiency and reducing the environmental impact of offshore platforms.
