Tampere invites ideas for new museum building
The Sara Hildén Art Museum is to be surrounded by office and manufacturing buildings used by Finlayson.
City of TampereThe City of Tampere has launched an architectural competition for designing a new building for the downtown-bound Sara Hildén Art Museum.
The competition participants are tasked with sketching a building that is congruous with the setting distinguished by old factory buildings and green and cultural areas in the largest inland city in the Nordics.
“The contestants will be required to design a high-quality building that acknowledges the surrounding city structure and the valuable cultural and green areas,” outlined Deputy Mayor Jaakko Stenhäll. “The proportions must be feasible in terms of lifespan, functionality and the technical-economic point of view.”
The relocation will expand the physical dimensions, enable the adoption of modern museum technology and improve the accessibility of the Sara Hildén Art Museum, already a popular attraction in Tampere. The site and its buildings are owned and developed by Varma Mutual Pension Insurance Company.
“The new museum will support the attractiveness and vitality of the western city centre and strengthen the cultural and leisure resources, as well as the concentration of jobs, in the area,” envisioned Kai Niinimäki, the head of real estate at Varma.
Held in co-operation with the Finnish Association of Architects, the competition will run until 2 December. The winning submission is to be announced in early 2021.
