Linda Liukas wins in China
Finnish author and coding pioneer Linda Liukas has won the top prize at the Design Intelligence Award in China.
Liukas was awarded for Hello Ruby, her acclaimed series of children’s books that teaches them programming. The book has been published in over 20 languages.
The Finnish author and coding pioneer was selected from 2 700 entries, and took home a 130 000-euro prize. The news was reported by Helsinki Design Week.
“Winning this competition is absolutely fabulous,” Liukas is quoted by the website. Helsinki Design Week also notes she had been caught by surprise by the award, as her books do not represent the industrial design-focus the China Academy of Art has typically focused on.
“I’ve thought of myself as perhaps an illustrator and an author, not as a designer,” she says. “During the competition I realised that Hello Ruby actually represents educational design: I design what parents and schools should teach to children about the world that is becoming increasingly technological.”
