The Finnish supplier of cargo handling solutions, Kalmar, has won an order for 23 diesel-electric straddle carriers from Transnet.

The straddle carriers will be supplied to Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) operating from Pier 2 of the Durban Container Terminal, which handles 65 per cent of South Africa’s container volume and is the largest and busiest container terminal in Africa.

Kalmar will also deliver a straddle carrier simulator to the Durban Container Terminal as part of the contract. It can be used for training purposes on site.

“We are delighted about this order which is built on long-term partnership between Kalmar and Transnet,” Pekka Helimo, senior sales manager, Intelligent Horizontal Transportation Solutions at Kalmar says. “Our previous straddle carrier delivery was completed in October 2014, and Transnet already operates a substantial fleet of Kalmar straddle carriers in their Durban terminal.”

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, is an industry leader in terminal automation and energy efficient container handling, with one in four of all container movements in the world handled by a Kalmar solution.
