Finnish universities continue to rank highly by global comparison

QS World University Rankings has included a total of nine universities in Finland in its annual list of the world’s best.

This year saw over 1 400 universities assessed by the QS World University Rankings. The main criteria used to determine a university’s position included academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-to-student ratio, international student ratio and international faculty ratio.

In the 106th position overall, the University of Helsinki was the highest ranking Finnish higher education institute. Aalto University was 116th, the University of Turku 291st and the University of Jyväskylä 347th.

Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology LUT made the most significant leap from last year for Finnish universities, moving up from to the 414th to 388th position. It especially impressed in the citation per faculty indicator, the measurement of research activities.

“High-quality science is at the heart of LUT’s strategy,” said Jari Hämäläinen, LUT’s vice rector for research. “To be ranked among the top 33 universities in the world is an incredible achievement for which I would like to thank our entire scientific community.”

Elsewhere on the list, the University of Oulu came in 392nd, followed by Tampere University (415), the University of Eastern Finland (521–530) and Åbo Akademi University (601–650).

Topping the global list this year were MIT – Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US and the University of Cambridge in the UK.
