Eight Finnish universities have been included in this year’s Shanghai Ranking, including three in the top 500 worldwide.

Known formally as the Academic Ranking of World Universities, Shanghai Ranking uses several indicators of academic and research performance to assess more than 2 000 universities. Of these, it put together the top 1 000.

The University of Helsinki was the highest-ranking Finnish representative on the list, coming in 74th. The University of Turku (301-400) and Aalto University (401-500) were the other two Finnish universities to make the world’s top 500.

The universities of Eastern Finland, Oulu and Tampere each found themselves in the 501–600 bracket. The University of Jyväskylä (701-800) and Lappeenranta University of Technology (901-1000) rounded out the Finnish contingent.

The universities were ranked according to the number of “alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers, papers published in Nature and Science, papers indexed in major citation indices”, and their per capita academic performance.

The top three positions were taken by Harvard University and Stanford University in the US, and Cambridge University in England.
