Finnish kids film wins big in Germany
The winning Finnish film, Jill and Joy’s Winter, competed against over 181 other films for youngsters.
Known in Finnish as Onnelin ja Annelin talvi, the film was deemed the audience’s favourite at Schlingel, an international film festival for children and young audiences in Germany.
Director Saara Cantell‘s film is based on its namesake, a book by Marjatta Kurenniemi. After the film hit Finnish screens back in 2014, it went on to attract over 200 000 viewers.
Aava Merikanto, who plays Onneli, and Lilja Lehto (Anneli) were on hand at the festival when the award was announced.
“This was the first time ever that we saw the film abroad,” the actresses say in a release. “We were really surprised and happy when our film won.”
The film is soon to get a sequel, under the working title of Jill, Joy and a Mysterious Stranger (Onneli, Anneli ja salaperäinen muukalainen). Its release date in Finland is slated for January 2017.
