FIVE FROM FINLAND: Solutions for better sleep
If you’re looking for some novel ways to optimise your sleep and to ensure a good night’s rest for the whole family, these Finnish companies have got you covered.
In the anxious times of COVID-19, taking control of sleep is becoming even more important than ever before. Healthy and sufficient sleep is known to be beneficial for the immune system, it helps us to fully recharge during the night and to stay refreshed and stress-resistant during the day.
Sleep tight with these five Finnish innovations!
Among the growing number of gadgets and apps developed to measure and evaluate sleep, the smart ring designed by this Oulu-headquartered healthtech company surely stands out due to its top-notch technology and sleek design.
Oura is relentlessly educating consumers on why sleep matters and is planning use the recently raised funding to further facilitate the product development, hire new talent, as well as to increase academic collaborations. The latest example of that is a partnership with the University of California, San Francisco to determine if Oura smart rings can be used for early detection of the COVID-19 virus.
“Sleep is currently one of the most sought-after pieces of the health puzzle,” underlined CEO Harpreet Singh Rai. “Improving your sleep is the first step in spurring better habits and ultimately preventing avoidable health issues.”
On a mission to boost people’s wellbeing, this Oulu-based technology company has designed state-of-the-art active noise cancelling earplugs that come in handy whenever you deal with annoying environmental noises: on a plane, at the dentist or… in your own bed.
Sleeping in silence seems like an impossible dream for those who are easily disturbed by snoring or ambient noises coming through walls. QuietOn Sleep earplugs are optimised for sleeping on a pillow and their noise cancelling capabilities designed for snoring frequencies.
The tiny yet effective snoring killer has proved to be highly sought after in global markets as quiet and relaxing nights are always on demand.
“Our feedback has been magical,” rejoiced co-founder Janne Kyllönen. “The product has the potential to change people’s lives. Its ability to minimise the irritation caused by snoring has already saved some marriages.”
With its profound expertise in sleep sensing technology, this innovative company offers a contactless solution to sleep and recovery measurement. Instead of wearing the device, you just slide it under your mattress, no matter how thick it is.
“Using it is easy: you place the sensor crosswise under your mattress, under the area where your heart is whilst sleeping,” explained CEO Heikki Räisänen. “The sensor registers things such as your breathing, heart rate and even heart-rate variability in real time, as well as your movements in bed.”
In addition to health-minded consumers, Emfit also targets athletes and other sports professionals who can benefit from its contact-free solution and highly detailed sleep and recovery analysis.
The age-old problem of lack of sleep is well familiar to almost all new parents and their restless babies. Hanna Sissala, an entrepreneur and a mother of two from Helsinki, has fixed it with her life-changing invention: a self-rocking mattress.
LullaMe Solina is the first baby mattress with in-built, automatic mechanism that gently rocks the baby to sleep for both naps and at night. Thanks to this award-winning product, babies can learn the skill of falling asleep while their parents enjoy a much-needed break.
Made using a safe breathable mesh fabric and installed at the bottom of a baby cot instead of a standard mattress, LullaMe Solina is a risk-free solution. For parents’ convenience, the rocking movement can be controlled with a mobile phone or a remote controller.
“You can see a mother has been involved in the design. There have not been any compromises,” Sissala told us in 2016 when, her startup was known under the name of Familings.
Since a restful sleep is an important part of any hotel stay, the global hotel industry is constantly searching for new ways to keep guests comfortable. The innovation designed by Valpas in collaboration with Wirepas guarantees guests a bedbug-free sleep experience.
Valpas rightly believes that it’s better to prevent a bedbug issue than to fight its consequences and encourages hotels to replace their existing bed legs with its smart legs. They include an integrated trap that bugs can’t escape and sensors that detect bugs inside the trap.
All bed legs in the hotel are connected via a smart Bluetooth mesh network that makes it possible to send real-time room status updates and notifications of prevented incidents to the Valpas web app.
“If we manage to keep hotels safe and give travellers peace of mind, this is something super useful and valuable for the whole world,” co-founder and CEO Martim Gois shared with us. “Our vision for the long term is to advance happier travel in a more holistic way.”
