Sino-Finnish energy projects announced in China
Four new pilot projects between Finland’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment and China’s National Energy Administration (NEA) have been announced in connection with President Sauli Niinistö’s state visit to China.
The projects announced by NEA on 14 January deal with the energy internet, geothermal energy in Zhoukou, biomass gasification for coal fueled power plants and micro-energy grids in Nansha.
The pilots were selected from a pool of 20 applications by a group of Chinese and Finnish experts, who included representatives from Business Finland, Finnish universities and Finnish corporations. The application round was opened in accordance with a memorandum of understanding signed in June 2017 between the Finnish and Chinese ministries.
“We are engaged in long-term co-operation with NEA, and from the very beginning we have been building on co-operation based on the strengths of both countries,” said Pentti Puhakka, ministerial adviser at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment. “Opportunities for co-operation in the energy sector were taken into account in the joint declaration signed during the state visit of the President of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping, in 2017.”
Chinese and Finnish energy companies and other stakeholders will now co-operate to launch concrete measures to realise the pilot projects.
“The Finnish companies participating in Business Finland’s Smart Energy Finland programme offer innovative, reliable and clean solutions,” commented Helena Sarén, programme director for Smart Energy Finland. “The active participation of these companies in our activities in China has been essential for the creation of these pilot projects and for building co-operation based on trust.”
