Finland ranked best in fundamental rights
The World Justice Project (WJP) has published its annual Rule of Law Index, placing Finland in third place globally.
Finland held on to the position from the previous survey and retained its top spot in the fundamental rights and criminal justice system categories. In terms of overall performance, Denmark (1st) and Norway (2nd) ranked ahead of Finland, whereas the last three spots were occupied by the Democratic Republic of the Congo (124th), Cambodia (125th), and Venezuela (126th).
The index measures rule-of-law adherence worldwide and is one of the most comprehensive studies conducted annually. This year’s study is based on original data from 120 000 household and 3 800 expert surveys in 126 countries. The analysis is conducted across eight pillars: constraints on government powers, absence of corruption, open government, fundamental rights, order and security, regulatory enforcement, civil justice and criminal justice.
The overall results suggest a decline in the rule of law for a second consecutive year. The decrease is especially notable in the constraints on government powers category, where 61 countries took steps back. The good news is that performance in the absence of corruption category improved for the second year running.
