Sky is the limit for Finavia airports

Finavia’s airports welcomed 12.3 million passengers in the first six months of 2018. This amounts to an additional 1.3 million passengers, or growth of 11.9 per cent, compared to last year’s figures from the same time period.

Meanwhile, Helsinki Airport saw a record-breaking 10.1 million passengers pass through it during that time and is looking to more than double the number by the end of the year.

“In addition to Helsinki Airport, the direction is good at the airports located in the central regions of Finland,” saysJoni Sundelin, director of Helsinki Airport. “The excellent numbers speak for a favourable economic situation, as well as the strengthening of Helsinki Airport’s position as a bridge between Europe and Asia. This development has also given a boost to the other airports in our network.”

Sweden and Germany remain the favourite destinations from Finland, while the preferred destination from the provinces was Spain. Tourism flights to Greece are also increasing in popularity, while charter flights from England to Finnish Lapland grew by a fifth.

Helsinki Airport experienced the greatest growth in the number of transfer passengers, which increased by 23.9 per cent.

“We expect the growth at Helsinki Airport to continue and are projecting more than 21 million passengers this year,” Sundelin says. “Helsinki Airport is currently undergoing an over a billion-euro investment programme that will help us prepare to serve 30 million passengers.”
