Finnish film plays to win in Sweden

The Violinist is a story about love, ambition and shooting for the stars.Mjölk Movies

Director Paavo Westerberg’s debut film The Violin Player (Viulisti) is to compete for the title of Best Nordic Film at this year’s Göteborg International Film Festival.

The Violin Player will face off with eight other Nordic films in Gothenborg for the chance to win a Dragon Award for Best Nordic Film, and the world’s largest film prize of one million Swedish krona (approximately 100 000 euros).

“Being selected for the main category of such a significant festival feels absolutely unbelievable, especially as it is my debut film,” director Westerberg comments, in a release. “I’m extremely honoured and grateful on behalf of the film and our whole splendid crew.”

The Violin Player is a romantic drama set in the world of classical music. Its themes include ambition, the pain of giving up and the pursuit of dreams. The film’s protagonists include Matleena KuusniemiOlavi UusivirtaSamuli Edelmann and Kim Bodnia.

The news follows the announcement earlier this week that Finnish documentary Entrepreneur (Yrittäjä) will also have its world premiere at the festival.

The Göteborg International Film Festival is being held from 26 January to 5 February, andThe Violin Player will be screened on 30 January.
