Equinix to build new data centre in Finland

The new HE7 data centre will be built in close proximity to Equinix’s HE6 data centre in the city of Espoo. Equinix

US-based global interconnection and data centre company Equinix has announced a new International Business Exchange (IBX) data centre in the Helsinki metropolitan area.

Equinix will invest around 20 million US dollars (approx. 17 million euros) in the first phase of the data centre, which is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2019. It will be fully powered by renewable energy and will have a total of 1 475 cabinets, of which 250 will be added in the initial phase.

The so-called HE7 data centre will address increasing demand for interconnection bandwidth capacity from both Finnish and international businesses looking to strengthen their competitive position in the digital economy.

“Numerous of our local and international customers are constantly requiring more capacity for interconnections to, among others, cloud and SaaS providers,” commentedSami Holopainen, managing director of Equinix Finland.

The data centre will offer secure and direct interconnection to over 1 300 businesses internationally, including to the world’s largest cloud service providers. Additional connectivity is offered through the Equinix Internet Exchange introduced in Finland in 2017.

Finland is an important digital gateway for data flowing in and out of Northern Europe due to its strategic location and robust infrastructure consisting of, for example, the Cinia C-Lion1 subsea cable between Finland and Germany.

Equinix currently operates six data centres in the Helsinki metropolitan area, which are part of Equinix’s global collective of 200 data centres in 52 countries.
