DAILY BRIEF: Moominvalley is lauded globally, funding, currency, transport and education
Finnish animated series Moominvalley is racking up awards abroad.

Evli Growth Partners leads investments in Refurbed, the Mint of Finland continues to produce Danish coins, Teleste equips high-speed trains in France, Sanako moves classes online in Lithuania, and Gutsy’s Moominvalley wins international awards.
Finnish venture capital firm Evli Growth Partners is leading a 17 million-euro Series A funding round for Refurbed, a European marketplace for refurbished electronics. Other participants in the round include Almaz Capital, Bonsai Partners, All Iron Ventures, FJ Labs and several existing investors. Evli and the founders of Refurbed first hooked up at the Slush startup and tech event in Helsinki. The Austria-based startup refurbishes devices such as phones, laptops and tablets and puts them on the market. It has more than 150 000 customers in Europe and sales of over 45 million US dollars (approx. 41 million euros).

The Mint of Finland will continue to produce coins for Denmark until 2025 after signing a new four-year framework agreement with Danmarks Nationalbank. The Mint of Finland won the assignment after having been found to have the best price-quality ratio in a tendering process organised by the Danish monetary authority. The Finnish state-owned company’s clients consists mainly of the central banks, finance ministries and mints of different countries.
Finnish technology company Teleste will supply an onboard solution for Alstom’s Avelia Horizon high-speed trains. The order includes equipment for 50 trains and an option to extend the contract for another 50. The first equipment is to be deployed next year, which include passenger information solutions, onboard video surveillance, audio and video recording, public address services, onboard TFT displays, and LED displays.

Finnish edtech company Sanako’s online services have been introduced by 130 Lithuanian schools to move their classes online. Sanako Connect was originally designed as a language-learning solution, but teachers have found it to be well suited for other teaching purposes as well. All teaching in Lithuania will move online within two weeks, and more schools are set to start using Sanako Connect. The Finnish company is providing the software for free this spring semester in all countries where distance learning can be implemented.
Finnish animated series Moominvalley has won the Best Children’s Series Award at the British Animation Awards 2020, and the entire Japanese voice cast of the series have been awarded at Seiyu Awards in Japan. Produced by Finland’s Gutsy Animations, Moominvalley is a new adaptation of late Finnish artist Tove Jansson’s beloved works. The series has been sold to over 30 countries and has just aired its second season, with many famous actors and celebrities lending their voices to the Moomintroll and his eccentric family and friends.
