Optomed receives a medical device approval in China, Tamturbo secures a significant investment, TietoEVRY and IFS provide a cloud solution to Suzuki Garphyttan, Rovio acquires Darkfire Games, and LUT University supports digital transformation in industry.
Finnish medical technology company Optomed has received a medical devices regulatory approval in China for a new eye-screening product. Optomed Smartscope EY80 has a wide field of view and is designed for the retinal screening of newborn babies and small children. Optomed can start commercial operation of the product following the approval from the Chinese Food and Drug Administration (CFDA). The company believes it is the first non-contact fundus camera approved for newborn imaging in China.
Swiss-headquartered engineering company Sulzer has made an investment to acquire 25 per cent of Tamturbo, a Finnish manufacturer of oil-free industrial air compressor systems. Tamturbo and Sulzer have collaborated since 2018, with Tamturbo’s disruptive technology complementing Sulzer’s lower-pressure compressor offerings in such industries as pulp and paper, food, metals, mining and chemical processing. Sulzer’s strong brand, industrial contacts and global presence will offer significant growth opportunities to Tamturbo.

Finland-headquartered TietoEVRY and Sweden-based IFS will provide end-to-end business process support to Suzuki Garphyttan, a world-leading supplier of advanced spring wire and part of Nippon Steel Corporation. Suzuki Garphyttan needed a new comprehensive enterprise resource planning (ERP) platform for its plan to expand its presence in sectors such as automotive, food and beverage, and medical equipment. After an extensive evaluation process, Suzuki Garphyttan opted for IFS’s ERP cloud solution and TietoEVRY as an implementation partner.
Finnish game studio Rovio Entertainment has acquired Copenhagen-based role-playing games specialist Darkfire Games. Rovio bought all outstanding shares in the studio, which will now become its subsidiary under the name Rovio Copenhagen. The studio will continue to focus on RPGs, and Rovio will take on the studio’s soft-launched mobile RPG Darkfire Heroes.
LUT University in Lappeenranta, Finland, is supporting the growth and digital transformation of industrial companies by developing highly detailed digital replicas of factory floors, machinery, production processes and more, which help to increase production efficiency.
