All the daily Finnish business news that works: Wärtsilä, Nokia, Eltel Finland, Fiksuruoka.fi and a significant deal in Finland make headlines.

Finnish technology group Wärtsilä and partner PSA Marine have successfully completed the first commercial trials for maritime autonomous surface ships (MASS) at the Port of Singapore. The IntelliTug project has used a 27-metre harbour tug fitted with Wärtsilä’s technology to test autonomous navigation in the port waters and has verified its capability to avoid a variety of obstacles. The project is fully backed by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, which looks to fast-track the introduction of autonomous ship operations at the world’s busiest transshipment hub.
Finnish company Nokia’s research arm, Nokia Bell Labs, has broken world records and announced several new innovations in fibre optics that enable faster and higher-capacity 5G networks. Its researchers set a new world record for the highest single carrier bit rate at 1.52 terabits per second (Tbit/s) over 80 kilometres of standard single-mode fibre. Put into perspective, the speed is enough to simultaneously stream 1.5 million YouTube videos and is four times the speed of current state-of-the-art networks. The new announced innovations coming out of Nokia Bell Labs will strengthen Nokia’s ability to meet ever-growing data, capacity and latency demands in the upcoming 5G era.

Swedish company Eltel’s communication business in Finland has extended its framework agreement with a large Finnish telecom operator for a three-year period. The deal covers fixed telecom services and is worth approximately 66 million euros. Eltel’s responsibilities will include planning, construction, installation and maintenance works at the customer’s network sites.
Finnish food recovery delivery service Fiksuruoka.fi nearly tripled sales on its online marketplace in the past week. The company runs Finland’s only online food recovery shop, which is open around the clock, with home deliveries taking between one and three days in the whole of Finland. The upswing in grocery shopping on the site is also helping to solve another pressing problem, as Fiksuruoka.fi aims to salvage two million kilos of foodstuffs this year that would otherwise be wasted.
