ABB Finland has been awarded an order of close to 30 million euros from Abu Dhabi. The order represents the largest transformer contract ever received by ABB’s transformer factory in Vaasa, Finland.

ABB will supply special transformers and reactors for oil and gas platforms and artificial islands in Abu Dhabi. The order is part of a close-to-70-million-euro contract between ABB and the world’s largest shipbuilding company, Hyundai Heavy Industries, on an extensive electrification and automation delivery for the oil and gas company ADMA-OPCO.

ABB Finland’s special transformers will convert the voltage of the electricity generated on the artificial islands so that it can be transmitted to the oil platforms through a submarine cable. Because the distance between the artificial islands and the oil platforms is around 70 kilometres, reactors will also be required to balance the reactive power.

The transformers and reactors for explosive atmospheres included in the order will be manufactured at ABB’s transformer factory in Vaasa.
