Finnish environmental and industrial measurement specialist Vaisala has strengthened its remote wind sensing offering by acquiring French company Leosphere.

Vaisala has acquired all the shares of Leosphere for a purchase price of 38 million euros.

The acquisition strengthens Vaisala’s position globally as a leading provider of remote wind sensing technologies, which are relevant to several of its key customer segments.

“Leosphere fits perfectly into Vaisala by complementing the weather and environment business area’s offering in remote wind sensing with its high-end ground-based and turbine-mounted wind lidars,” says Jarkko Sairanen, EVP of weather and environment at Vaisala. “Wind lidars are high-performance measurement devices which can detect wind speed and direction accurately, even beyond a 10-kilometre distance.”

Leosphere employs around 125 people and sells wind lidars in more than 40 countries. Its net sales amounted to 27 million euros in 2017. Vaisala is estimating that the new business will contribute around 10 million euros in net sales, with a 10 per cent operating profit margin, towards its fourth-quarter result in 2018.
