The WBM Bio Business 2015 competition has named UPM Lappeenranta Biorefinery as the Commercial Scale Plant of the Year.

The award recognises innovation and promotion of the bioeconomy via the proven commercial scale production of a biofuel or bio-based chemical product. UPM Biofuels’ new renewable fuel technology was recognised by an independent panel of judges comprised of CEOs and professionals from leading global bio-based companies.

Opened in January this year, UPM Lappeenranta Biorefinery is the first commercial scale biorefinery in the world producing wood-based, renewable diesel. It utilises raw material crude tall oil, a wood-based residue of pulp production sourced from UPM’s own pulp mills in Finland. The annual capacity for the 175 million-euro facility is 100 000 tonnes of UPM BioVerno diesel.

UPM BioVerno reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80 per cent when compared to traditional diesel, and reports no decline in performance when compared to regular diesel fuel.
