REACH creates new business
Thursday, 04 March, 2010
The European Union regulation on chemicals, REACH creates new and successful business possibilities. REACHlaw Ltd found its business model somewhere between global industry and EU Chemicals Agency. The future looks bright for the high-growth company.
Expert within the environmental sector, REACHlaw assists companies operating in the European markets and those endeavoring to find their way overseas in meeting the requirements of the EU chemicals legislation. The decree which took effect in June 2007 binds companies to estimate the risks associated with the utilization of chemicals while securing their safe usage.
REACH, which stands for Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals, has presented a considerable workload and effort to companies in the chemical industry ranging from manufacturers to importers and the supply chain. Many companies would not make it without a helping hand.
— We operate as a link between industry and the EU Chemicals Agency. We take care of meeting the requirements set by the legislation on behalf of out clients. We sign contracts, take care of missing research, put together cost estimates, help in decision-making and deal with registration services, tells Chief Financial Officer Jouni Honkavaara.
— There is a plenty of potetial: Chemicals legislation is a strategic challenge for tens of thousands of manufacturing companies around the world.
Top growth to be expected
REACHlaw, which started its operations in 2008, received the 2009 Internationalization Award in February from the President of the Republic, Tarja Halonen. Business pulls REACHlaw strongly overseas to Europe, Asia, Latin America and the United States.
— The transition of the EU legislation offered us a brilliant opportunity to get involved in entirely new business. Our success depends on conceptized, comprehensive services and functional international networks, through which we are able to reach new clients. Finland’s good reputation within the environmental field is an extra asset to us, says CEO Lasse Musakka.
Through the emerging new business possibilities about a hundred companies have come into being in Europe, although some of them have already disappeared from the markets. REACHlaw is one of the survivors. The company is in a constant process of expanding its operational concept, moving towards more integrated consultation within the environmental field, and is also in the process of planning a joint venture in India.
The company currently employs 20 experts representing about ten different nationalities. The company’s turnover during its first year of operation was 1.3 million euros. A notable growth spurt is expected for this year.
The company has 200 clients in over 30 countries and 20 partners all over the world. The goal of the growth-driven company is to increase its annual turnover in the next five years to 12 million euros, while increasing the number of employees to 60.
