The Wood Products Industry of Metsä Group is giving its Kerto LVL and plywood operations a significant boost in Finland and Estonia.

Seeking to better meet the growing global demand for its products and improve competitiveness, Metsä Wood is implementing some 100 million euros of investments in steps by the end of 2018. This amount is essentially being divided down the middle between the two countries.

A new birch veneer peeling and drying line is to be built in Äänekoski on the Metsä Group’s Pulp and Paperboard Industries’ mill site. Meanwhile, its Suolahti mill’s current birch veneer line is to be transferred to Estonia, where a new plywood mill is being constructed.

Together this will increase the total annual birch plywood production volume by approximately 30 000 cubic metres.

Plans are also afoot for the Suolahti mill to host production of a new softwood-based specialty product with an annual volume of approximately 60 000 cubic metres. Elsewhere, the annual production capacity at its Kerto LVL mill in Lohja will be increased by 20 000 cubic metres by replacing two oldest production lines with one new line.

Metsä Wood anticipates around 200 new jobs to be created in Estonia as a result. The number of the company’s mill personnel in Finland will not be affected by the changes in wood harvesting and logistics.
