Finnish pioneer in industrial enzymes MetGen has signed a joint technology development agreement with the US-based renewable biochemical producer Sweetwater Energy.

The aim of the collaboration is to develop lignin-based products for a range of industries such as glue, plastic, polymer and chemicals.

With the help of MetGen‘s LIGNO technology, the two companies can break down Sweetwater Energy’s ultra-clean lignin into its fundamental component parts. This allows for the development of different high value lignin-based products that cannot be developed directly from raw lignin.

“Products produced from Sweetwater’s Ultra-lignin help to advance the global bioeconomy by competing directly with petrochemical industrial products,” says Arunas Chesonis, CEO and chairman of the board at Sweetwater. “With the help of MetGen’s LIGNO technology we can create high-quality and affordable products that utilise the real value of lignin.”

MetGen and Sweetwater Energy want to commercialise their solution before releasing it worldwide.

It’s been a busy 12 months for the Finnish company, winning an award and also boosting the efficiency and economics of renewable chemicals production.
