Finnish elevator and escalator industry giant KONE is to equip two new MV WERFTEN cruise ships being built in Germany. In addition, the company will deliver elevators and escalators to two MV WERFTEN ‘Endeavor’ expedition mega yachts that will operate in the Arctic, Antarctic and in the Tropics.

The cruise ships being built at MV WERFTEN’s shipyard in Wismar have been specifically designed with the Asian cruise market in mind. KONE‘s contract includes the delivery of 42 elevators and 16 escalators, with an option for two similar vessels.

Once completed the ships will be 340 metres long, with a capacity of more than 5 000 passengers and over 2 000 crew members. The two ‘Global class’ cruise ships are owned by Genting Hong Kong and are due to be completed in 2020 and 2021 respectively.

“With early involvement, we’re proud to have co-created with the customer a tailor-made solution that meets the needs of Asian cruise passengers,” says Timo Pakarinen, managing director for KONE’s Marine business.

KONE has also been contracted by MV WERFTEN to equip two of its ‘Endeavor’ mega yachts with passenger and service elevators. The contract has an option for one additional yacht.

The ‘Endeavor’ class ships will be the largest expedition yachts in the world designed for operations in the Arctic, Antarctic and in the Tropics, and will be delivered to Crystal Yacht Expedition Cruises in 2019.

The orders were booked in KONE’s second quarter of 2017.
