Finnish learning game studio Lightneer closes 2.8 million-euro financing round, while naming former Rovio Mighty Eagle Peter Vesterbacka as its “brand breaker”.

The financing round was lead by American venture capital fund GSV Acceleration and Finnish IPR.VC, each providing over one million euros.

The investment arrives alongside the news of former Rovio CEO Peter Vesterbacka joining the Lightneer team.

“I’ve been vocal for a long time about my passion for using games as tools for learning,” says Vesterbacka. “But such an undertaking demands nothing less than a dedicated commitment of energy, resources and creativity on all of our parts. I could not be more thrilled to help the team at Lightneer change the paradigm of our relationships with games.”

Until now, Vesterbacka, a founding member of Lightneer, has served as a board member and investor in the company.

“Peter’s big time involvement with Lightneer is yet another demonstration of our firm belief that education technology deserves world-class video game talent,” says company CEO Lauri Järvilehto. “Our ambition is to fuel a global revolution in how children learn. Vision of that magnitude needs minds who understand that a great play experience is also a tremendous learning experience.”
