Jussi Hiltunen has received the Best Director award at the St. Petersburg International Festival of Debut and Student Film Beginning for his debut short film Armoton Maa (The Law of the Land).

Armoton Maa is a drama situated in Finnish Lapland, a familiar setting for director Hiltunen who is a native of Lapland’s administrative capital Rovaniemi.

Hiltunen and producer Kai Nordberg from Helsinki-based Making Movies were on hand on Friday 24 November in St. Petersburg to accept the award.

“The Making Movies production company has in recent years invested strongly in young directors,” Nordberg comments in a press release. “Our previous production Tyttö Nimeltä Varpu [Little Wing] was also by a debut director and it won the Nordic Council’s best film of the year award. Armoton Maa now continues this winning streak. There is an internationally competitive generation of young directors growing in number in Finland and we have been able to play a significant part in this international breakthrough.”

The Law of the Land premiered in Finland on 20 January 2017.
