The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki has won the ‘European Discovery’ prize at the European Film Awards.

Known as Hymyilevä Mies in Finnish, director Juho Kuosmanen’s debut feature depicts the run-up to the 1962 world featherweight championship bout between Finnish country baker Olli Mäki and US titleholder Davey Moore.

The film’s latest award shares shelf space with accolades already accumulated from the USA, Switzerland, Macedonia and Cannes.

More than 3 000 members of the European Film Academy voted for this year’s European Film Awards. The awards ceremony was held in Wroclaw, Poland on 10 December.
