Finland has been ranked third on Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2017 list, which looks at the globe’s hottest trends, destinations and experiences for next year.

According to the travel and guidebook brand, “there’s never been a better time to discover Finland’s proudly unique culture and landscape”, especially in light of 2017 marking 100 years of its independence.

“The Finns will celebrate their centenary with gusto, with events planned in every region,” Lonely Planet enthuses. “Expect everything from al fresco concerts and communal culinary experiences to sauna evenings and vintage-travel-poster exhibitions.”

Lonely Planet also points to the abundant nature on offer here up north as a prime drawcard for visitors.

“Travellers who come to Finland typically expect memorable experiences in nature,” confirms Paavo Virkkunen, EVP of Visit Finland at Finpro. “Finnish national parks offer great opportunities for outdoor activities in all seasons. Nature is always near in Finland – stimulating natural attractions are available even to travellers who only stop in Helsinki.”

Finland is the only European country to make it to Lonely Planet’s top ten for next year.
