Finland’s Atol Avion and a US-based investor group have created a joint venture for the production, distribution and support of amphibious aircraft in the North American market.

Atol USA has also selected Brunswick Landing in the state of Maine for its US headquarters and production facility of the Atol 650 LSA aircraft.

The Atol 650 is a high performance, amphibious aircraft designed to the Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) rule and boasts an industry leading 600-pound useful load.

“Finland has 188 000 lakes, so we know the joys of water flying… and the demands,” says Anssi Rekula, Atol Avion co-founder and sales director. “Many of these lakes are remote and require range and reliability to access so we designed the 650 for this environment.”

Atol Avion will commence deliveries for European customers from their Finnish factory in Rovaniemi late this year. Deliveries from the Brunswick Landing operation are scheduled for mid-2018.

“Our goal from the beginning was to make the best plane in its class,” Rekula told us in 2015. “We feel we have achieved this.”
