”Wood cast” in demand
Onbone The third generation fracture treatment method OMNICAST™ consists of a selection of wood composite casts and a heating device, which is used for softening the material.The environmentally friendly OMNICAST™ is a fracture treatment product concept developed and productized by Onbone Oy. The company’s other product line, biodegradable bone cement is known as BIOCEMENT™. The company commercializes and markets medical equipment used in orthopedy and traumatology.
– The roots of the composite material originate from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Helsinki. The inventor and developer of the material is Antti Pärssinen, but all the founders of Onbone have taken part in the identification and commercialization of its clinical applications, tells CEO Petro Lahtinen.
Easily mouldable
OMNICAST™ “wood cast” was introduced to the experts for the first time in April 2010. According to Lahtinen the product has been received unreservedly positively – also by the clients.
– There is a clear market demand for the product, Lahtinen confirms.
The new fracture treatment product concept consists of a selection of wood composite casts and a heating device, which helps to soften the material. The product is entirely non-toxic, biodegradable and easily mouldable, in addition to which it can be handled without gloves.
– The product makes the clinicians’ work significantly easier when compared to traditional methods. The mounting of the cast is simple, fast, clean and safe. Thanks to its thermoplastic material the cast softens when heated, which makes it very easy to bend and mould.
Well-fitted cast
The end result is comfortable and well-fitted for the patient. This is because the product is light and thinner than ordinary casts. The material is also x-ray transparent, leaving no shades in x-rays, so the cast does not have to be removed during the imaging.
– We are excited to be able to offer the so-called third generation fracture treatment method for clinical treatment. We have faith in the product’s excellent properties and its global market potential, says Lahtinen.
– Finland is a high-tech country, so feedback received from here is valued also overseas. Our home market is small, but even more important. We have high expectations.
