Large batteries to Europe

European Batteries Aiming at becoming the European market leader, European Batteries Oy manufactures large lithium-ion based batteries and battery systems.
In June 2010 European Batteries Oy opened Europe’s first factory manufacturing large lithium-ion based batteries and battery systems in Varkaus. – The timing offers us an excellent opportunity for taking a significant market share, says CFO Martti Ukkonen.

Demand for the batteries and battery systems manufactured at the company’s Varkaus factory has been boosted by the motor vehicle industry and tightening environmental regulations. Large battery systems are needed not only in electric cars but also in work machinery, energy stores, ships and trains.

The factory’s operation has started according to expectations and the production has ascended according to the planned schedule. Meetings with clients are easy to arrange, thanks to the attractiveness of the matter. The company began test system deliveries already in July.

Demand especially from automobile factories has been great after the factory’s opening. The company opened its new factory at the right time, when global supply is still unable to meet demand. On the other hand, the product in question is so new that sectors other than the motor vehicle industry are only waking up to it.

By 2015 automobile manufacturers are expected to publish 120 different hybrid and full-electric cars. According to analytic estimates by 2020 the share of pure electric cars will be five percent of the entire vehicle market. With hybrids included, the total market share will rise to about 15-20 percent.

In order to prepare itself for the rapidly increasing demand, European Batteries is already planning to extend the factory. The extension, which is planned to take place in 2011-2012, will triple the factory’s production capacity.

Competition accelerates

One of the success factors of European Batteries Oy is the right kind of technology choice, which offers high frequency and long life. At the same time it fulfills the strict safety criteria in place for automobile factories.

The company covers the entire battery system production chain from battery cell manufacturing to control electronics and customer systems. The production which has been automated exceptionally comprehensively and lower material costs increase the company’s competitiveness.

The company’s major market is in Europe. Competing batteries are manufactured also in Asia and the United States. According to Ukkonen development in the industry has been taken furthest in Asia, where batteries are produced for domestic motor vehicle industry needs. Battery manufacturing in the United States is picking up with the same pace with European Batteries Oy.
