Let’s take the (design) elevator!
kone KONE wants to provide the best user experience when moving from one floor to another. An essential part of the total experience is design.World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 is bringing design close to its citizens. This could even take the form of a total elevator experience, something offering more than just transport between floors.
Known in particular for its elevator solutions, Kone Oyj is one of the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 project’s main co-operative partners. The decision to participate in the project was not a difficult one as the values inherent both in the project and in the company’s products and services are in harmony.
— Our vision is to provide the best user experience in an urbanizing world and in that way to be part of the creation of better functioning cities. WDCH 2012 offers us many interesting opportunities to tell about the significance of design both in Finland and out in the world, explains Brand Manager Ritva Seppänen.
In the everyday and in conferences
The aim of the WDCH 2012 project is to promote and support design from culture, economic and social utilization. The main themes of the year are the extension of design from products to systems and services, as well as the promotion of innovative and sustainable design. Also evident is the importance of design to the urban environment, to business life and for individual inhabitants.
— The year provides us with an excellent opportunity for international networking and co-operation, particularly with architects and designers, Seppänen emphasizes.
When it comes to networking and co-operation, Kone is very visibly present in three WDCH special projects: the Cities for All conference, the EASA Wastelands event and the Docomomo conference and exhibition. While in everyday life, Kone design is within reach of everyone.
— We have compiled, for example, a Kone circuit connecting to our products in a very concrete way. It is a map comprising 12 locations each featuring Kone elevator and escalator solutions and this map will be distributed at tourist points both at WDC and at Kone events.
Getting ever closer to the user
To achieve a better user experience, Kone offers its customers People Flow solutions which facilitate fluid, safe, comfortable and speedy passenger transport inside buildings. An important aspect of the user experience is visual design.
— A total elevator experience is not just a matter of getting from one floor to another. The experience should remain with the passenger and it should bring added value to the building. Through a variety of solutions, a unique and appropriate look and feel can be created for a building. At the same time it is possible to ensure that the elevators fit seamlessly with the building’s architecture, explains Seppänen.
During the Design year, a People Flow day will be held and its theme will naturally be design. The aim of the day is to get even closer to the users and customers by examining how, where and why people on a typical working day
move around buildings such as hotels, offices, hospitals, stations, apartment buildings or business centres.
— There is a lot more going on during the year. We are also offering our international customers during their visits to Finland a so-called supplementary programme of various WDCH 2012 events.
