Wonders of the changing world
The world is changing. This became evident once more upon a meeting with an environmental activist from Moscow. Environmentally conscious, world-saving hippies are far and few in our eastern neighbor country. Although Russians tend to complain about the state of the environment, only extremely few ideals actually take practical everyday effect beyond ceremonial speeches. The environment is being nationalized, which makes it somehow external to the people. So, without fuss, empty batteries from summer houses are hauled straight into the forests. No wonder. The Soviet Union simplified nature, considering it a resource, which was there to serve the needs of the nation. The only thing that saved the Russian natural resources during the capitalistic spree of the 90s was the country’s poorly developed economy, and miserable infrastructure.
In the 21st century Russia has focused on, and optimized the utilization of natural resources. Russians have had a chance to proudly follow, how their oil tankers have been set to the Gulf of Finland to earn the desperately needed export money for the nation. Environment plays minor role in the great play, which is intended to restore Russia’s superpower position, and the nation’s faith in its father land.
But something has also changed. Upon the collapse of the Soviet Union, and through technological development also the isolation of people has become impossible. A new generation was born, which has had the chance to challenge old paradigms. These youth no longer believe in the wellbeing brought about by oil, in addition to which, they are willing to be the first ones to change. This gives hope. Perhaps slow change can take place in all of us.
