The best test country for electric cars

Representative of a certain car manufacturer arrived for a visit in to Finland and wondered with a hint of doubt how Finland could possibly help in developing electric cars. It didn’t take long until he was enthusiastically photographing an active electric car charging point.

Finland has excellent chances of profiling as the best and most famous test environment for electric cars. Finland’s assets are the country’s developed and reliable electrical grids and long tradition of testing in challenging conditions. In addition, Finland has a number of companies that build and develop smart grids. High engineering expertise and top class research help the country to maintain its position as a flagship developer in the electric vehicle industry. Testers that choose Finland get a chance to utilize this immense brain capital.

In the near future great possibilities will open in the middle ground between electric cars and the infrastructure needed for their operation. Before this potential can be utilized what is needed is electric cars, such as those currently manufactured by the Finnish speciality car manufacturer Valmet Automotive.
It is important to create framework for the development of electric cars. The building of test environments can be kicked off swiftly in many cities, for the desire to develop electric vehicles is high. It makes sense that cities cooperate and take part in attracting vehicle manufacturers from overseas, for instance from India.

A good example of Finnish readiness is the launch of Eco Urban Living electric car project in Espoo. The City of Espoo, Fortum, Nokia and Valmet Automotive have agreed on building a Living Lab environment in Espoo. The project creates a foundation for cooperation between companies, cities and universities – as well as making Espoo’s innovation concentration extremely attractive even internationally.
