Finland's strength lies in deep expertise
For a small export-driven economy expertise is nearly a matter of life and death. Finland is one of the world’s best examples of this. The country is known for its products, which are based on top expertise, but expertise once ablaze will not keep glowing by itself. One of the achievements of Finland’s success is based on our IT-expertise particularly in so-called embedded systems.Finland would not be the origin of the world’s biggest cruise ships if we did not have our unique ecosystem, in which information technology has a significant role to play. The operational processes between the buyer and the supplier have been perfected to extreme flexibility. The giant cruise ship itself has been loaded to the rim with IT-based services, which are utilised to offer maximum marine comfort to the passengers.
In practice, all the successful Finnish products that have gained success around the world utilise embedded software intelligence, which in many cases is a crucial competitive advantage. The most well-known examples are Nokia mobile phones, Metso paper machinery, Ponsse harvesters, Kone elevators, Konecranes shipyard cranes and Wärtsilä engines.
The Finnish bank system is possibly the most advanced in the world, and Finnish agriculture is often brought out as an example of successful utilisation of IT in basic production.
Products and services based on information technology improve the quality of operations and services, as well as increasing the value added, productivity and cost-efficiency.
Most of the challenges of the Finnish society are based on population ageing, climate change and the debt-ridden public sector. Significant expectations are placed on information technology in solving these challenges.
The need for real experts is growing continuously. Although specialisation is important, other skills than technical mastery are necessary. Information technology is no longer a solitary occupation. What is needed are linguistic abilities, cooperational skills and the willingness to provide excellent service. And the customer deserves a responsive ear.
