Cleantech – New growth sector for Finland
The global economic crisis hit Finland with force. Our Gross National Product declined last year by seven per cent. Also export sector suffered severely. As a result of the on-going recession the country’s economic structure is bound to change. Finland is in the process of specializing on value chain management, high value-added products and highly specialized products. Through productizing Finnish expertise, education and wellness services can also become successful export items.Other real growth markets are found in the fields of energy and environmental business. Finland has extensive experience as the creator of clean processes and energy efficient solutions for instance in pulp and paper industry, metal refinery and the joint production of electricity and heat. Internationally speaking, Finnish environmental research and development operations are highly competitive. Strong investment on developing bioenergy takes place in Finland.
The market for environmental business is estimated to grow by about 10 per cent per annum. Clean energies, such as solar and wind power, are growing rapidly, by up to 30 per cent every year. Besides Finland, many other countries go for their share of the rapid growth in the field of environmental business. What is Finland’s special strength in this situation?
The answer is our strong technological expertise, agility and the ability to react promptly. Finnish companies are also good at networking. It is these agile business networks which assist in the internationalization of small and medium businesses.
The Confederation of Finnish Industries EK assists Finnish companies to find the right place for planting their seeds. This is done by two means: through the environmental forum of the EK and with the marketing brand, Cleantech Finland. The environmental forum offers a versatile networking platform for Finnish companies operating in the field of environmental business, while Finpro’s brand, Cleantech Finland, helps Finnish companies to market their expertise internationally.
