NANOCOMP

Lehmo-based Nanocomp Oy has been a pioneer in nanophotonics in Finland since 1997. This hi-tech company is one of the few in its field even on a global scale. Nanophotonics involves the direction of a beam of light using micro- or nano structures. At a practical level, it is applied, for example, in mobile phones and in the lenses of camera flash devices.

- There aren't so many of us in the field of nanophotonics. We are the only one in Finland and there aren't many more in the world, explains Nanocomp's Sales Director Mr Matti Eronen.

- At present our production is focused on small, so-called hand held devices. Nanocomp light conductors are used, for example, to direct light in cameras and mobile phones.

Because Nanocomp operates in such a hi-tech field, running its own product development is vital. The company employs several doctors of photonics and its R&D department works in close co-operation with the University of Joensuu.

Mr Eronen sees LED technology as a major application area for light conductors.

- The development of LED technology will open up new application areas for our business. As it develops, light conductors will be needed in ever narrower solutions and nanophotonics applications will also be needed in lighting of flexible materials, Mr Eronen notes.

As the technology develops, the future for Nanocomp looks, literally, bright. The company has grown year on year by tens of percent and according to Mr Eronen the company's goal is to double its turnover each year.

Our summer series introduces interesting and innovative companies from all over Finland.
