WinWinD celebrated the opening of new wind turbine plant in Hamina

Lehtikuva/Markku ULander WinWinD’s Hamina plant increases Finland’s wind power production capacity tenfold.

WinWinD opened its brand new, three megawatt wind turbine plant in Hamina on Wednesday. The new production facility will manufacture two wind turbines per month, and start off with 50 employees. The maximum capacity of the plant is 15 wind turbines per month and 250 employees.

WinWinD manufactures one and three megawatt wind turbines, which are based on innovative low speed technology. The company supplies a range of customers from Finland and overseas. According to WinWinD CEO Ilkka Hakala wind power projects have slowed down due to the difficult economic situation brought about by the recession. Right now it seems that the market is picking up.

- Wind power is one of the fastest growing energy sources in the world. Agreements connected to the prevention of climate change and the renunciation of fossil fuels will speed up the growth of wind power, Hakala says.

In the end of 2008 European wind power capacity corresponded to 4.3 percent of the entire energy consumption within the European Union. According to research up to 88 percent of Finns would like to increase the use of wind power. According to a survey conducted by the Federation of Finnish Technology Industries by 2020 Finland could provide even up to 35 000 wind power related jobs.
