Wärtsilä supplies power plants to the islands of Lesbos and Cyprus

Wärtsilä has received two power plant orders from the Eastern Mediterranean islands. This strengthens the company's leading position in the Mediterranean market. One order has been received to supply power generation equipment to the Greek island of Lesbos and the other to Cyprus. The combined value of these orders is approximately 40 million Euros.

The two orders commission Wärtsilä to supply the islands with decentralised power plants. These power plants are ideal in conditions, where the local electricity demand surges dramatically during the tourist season when the resident population is outnumbered by tourists. Wärtsilä's power plants, designed specifically for varying energy demand, are a highly efficient and environmentally friendly solution.

According to Harry Lindroos, the Regional Director for Eastern Europe at Wärtsilä Power Plants, the key requirements are for heavy duty units that can run on heavy fuel oil at full power during the summer months while, at the same time, having the lowest emissions. Wärtsilä's strength lies also in its comprehensive maintenance services, which are offered around the clock, seven days a week.

The strict environmental protection norms of the European Union require that the power plants produce extremely low emissions. The Wärtsilä engines are equipped with the latest low emission technical solutions. Due to its central location near the town of Larnaca, the Cyprus plant is also equipped with a separate system removing most of the nitrogen oxides from the plant's emissions.
